PHOENIX – Save Water Solutions and Community Leaders Sponsor Grand Opening. Phoenix Arizona- Once a dilapidated dumping site, the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Project opened Saturday for public viewing of waterfalls, birds and thousands of native plants lining the Phoenix banks of the Salt River.
A crowd of more than 1,000 adults and children milled around the Central Avenue bridge downtown overlooking the project, and many toured it to get a first view of the scenic area. Save Water Solutions was a premier sponsor of the event.
The $100 million, 600-acre project renewed a dry riverbed with a small desert stream that supports a riparian ecosystem and a 5-mile-long park that lends itself to biking, walking and jogging. Excavation began five years ago, after funding was secured from the city, the Maricopa County Flood Control District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The Rio Salado Habitat Restoration project is at the Salt River on Central Avenue between Buckeye and Broadway roads in Phoenix. Open daily, dawn to dusk.
